Clean Language is a process in which the conversation centres around metaphors that inform and drive us. It helps us understand the way people perceive themselves and their environment and creates an opportunity to change how we can respond.


"We are a well-oiled machine" describes a completely different experience of teamwork to  the comment: "We are a finely tuned instrument" or "We are a force of nature." Can you imagine how this team might function if these metaphors are not made explicit between team members?


Words are powerful, and business people harness this power when they use metaphors. The use of metaphors does three things:

1. Metaphors help capture attention.

2. Metaphors create connections with other people.

3. Metaphors simplify complex ideas.

If you understand your metaphors and those of your team you can respond with flexibility and creativity. Metaphors are like images. A single metaphor can express a thousand words. A single metaphor can reveal relationships with time & space, cause & effect, emotions and beliefs as well as cultural assumptions.
